What's in a Name?

As an investment management firm, we are committed to two principles: capital preservation and wealth creation. We draw these principles from our eponym, the Greek goddess Artemis. Usually known as the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, Artemis believed that as a huntress she was second to none, reacting vociferously against those who would dare to even suggest that their hunting abilities were superior to her own. Similarly, our firm strives to be the best at hunting and targeting the top alternative managers for inclusion in our portfolios.

A less commonly known quality of Artemis, though, was her relationship with safety. This characteristic, embodied in her name--which is linked to the word "artemes," meaning "safe" in Greek--is particularly manifest in a story in which she saved the infant Atalanta from dying after her father had abandoned her. The safekeeping of capital, too, is a virtue that is often overlooked in the selection of investment managers. Investors can frequently be misguided, seeking the highest possible yields without fully understanding the risks inherent in such a strategy. At Artemis, we believe that capital preservation is paramount and that risks should only be undertaken when there is reason to believe that markets will compensate investors accordingly.

The goddess Artemis was a paradox: while an aggressive huntress, she was also a goddess of safety. At Artemis Investment Management, we seek to hold in dynamic tension these two aspects of our eponym as they relate to the management of money: capital preservation and wealth creation.
